    Special Libraries’ Services for Governmental Institutions in Indonesia

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of the library service instances in Surabaya-Indonesia reviewed through a national standard library (SNP) 006: 2011. Design/methodology/approach – This study used a descriptive type. The population targeted in this study is the Special Libraries Government Agencies in Surabaya-Indonesia. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. Findings – The results of this study are many of the services provided by special libraries owned by government have not fulfilled the minimum standards of the Libraries’ National Standards (Standar Nasional Perpustakaan—SNP) 006:2011. It is expected to provide recommendations to special libraries government agencies to comply with the standards so that the library can provide excellent service to the user so that the rate of uses library increases. It also affects the employee\u27s performance because it corresponds to the special library functions in providing information to support the activities of the institution Research limitations/implications: The standard library defines a basic reference in organizing and managing a special library of government agencies in Indonesia. SNP examines the opening hours of service, type of service, as well as cooperation. Practical implications – - Originality/value – special libraries should implement services at least in accordance with predetermined standard

    Senior High School Students’ Use of Library Resources and Services

    Abstract Purpose – School library plays an important role in meeting the information needs of students. Students of Senior High School require information to support their personal, study, and environmental needs. Therefore, to meet their needs, high school students conduct information seeking. This study aims to determine the information seeking behavior of high school students in Surabaya. Design/methodology/approach – The method applied in this study is a descriptive quantitative approach. The samples of this study were high school students in Surabaya-East Java-Indonesia, selected by using multistage random sampling. The data collection was conducted through questionnaires. The sample size is 200 people. Findings – The results of this study indicate that the students’ major need of information relates to entertainment and following educations after graduating from high schools. The majority of high school students perform passive attention through magazines, passive search related to hobbies mostly done through magazines, active search by considering the accuracy as the criteria in choosing information sources, and continuous search through friends as a channel of information exchange. Research limitations/implications: - Practical implications – - Originality/value – Based on these results, libraries at school should provide sources of information which suits with the students’ needs, where magazines mainly support their needs, peers have important role on information sharing, and school libraries, specifically librarians and teachers, must be more proactive on asking their students to take benefit from libraries at schools

    Information Seeking Behaviour Model of Senior High School Students

    School libraries are a means for students to meet their information needs.  Students of Senior High School (henceforth SHS) require information to support their personal, study, and environmental needs. To meet those needs, SMA students do information seeking through information channels.  This research was aimed to identify an information seeking model of SMA students in Surabaya. The research employed a descriptive-quantitative approach.  The sample of the research was SHS students in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, that were chosen using the multistage random sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires.  The research found that the students’ information needs were mostly concerning entertainment and further education (after high school). The students responded to these needs calmly. Psychological, demographic, role-related, and environmental factors, as well as the characteristics of the information sources influenced information seeking.  In addition, teacher’s recommendation for using information channels also led SHS students to prefer to use the Internet. The majority of the respondents sought information when they needed it, but they kept looking for details to complete the required information.     Penilaian Pengguna terhadap Kualitas Layanan (Libqual) di Perpustakaan Perguruan Tinggi Negeri Surabaya

    Abstrak. Pelayanan yang dilakukan oleh perpustakaan secara langsung ataupun tidak akan menimbulkan citra perpustakaan baik citra positif maupun negatif. Citra tersebut menimbulkan persepsi pengguna dan akhirnya membuat penilaian pengguna terhadap perpustakaan. Dalam penelitian ini penulis ingin mengetahui mengenai tingkat persepsi pengguna atas kualitas layanan perpustakaan perguruan tinggi negeri yang meliputi dimensi affect of service, information control, library as place. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif yang sifatnya deskriptif dan teknik pengumpulan data kuisioner dengan teknik sampling nonrandom sampling dengan kriteria purposive sampling di Perpustakaan Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) dan Perpustakaan Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). Teknik pengolahan data yakni dengan membuat nilai rata-rata di setiap indikator kualitas layanan. Konsep kualitas layanan yang digunakan adalah LibQual+ℱ yang terdiri dari affect of service, information control, dan library as place. Hasilnya bahwa nilai rata-rata penilaian pengguna pada kinerja ketiga perpustakaan di atas adalah baik. Untuk perpustakaan UNESA dan ITS, urutan penilaian dari yang terbaik oleh pengguna adalah library as place, information control dan affect of service. Urutan penilaian pengguna atas dimensi yang terbaik pada perpustakaan Unair secara berturut-turut adalah library as place, affect of service, dan information control. Kata kunci: libqual, persepsi pengguna, perpustakaan perguruan tinggi Abstract. Services carried out by the library directly and will cause the image library of both positive and negative images. These images create the perception of users and ultimately make an assessment of the library users. In this study the authors wanted to know about the level of user perception on the quality of library services such as affect of service, information control, and library as place. This study uses a quantitative approach that are descriptive and questionnaire data collection techniques with nonrandom sampling with purposive sampling criteria in the library of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (Unair) and the library of the State University of Surabaya (UNESA). Data processing techniques to make the average value in every indicator of service quality. The concept of service quality used is LibQual + ℱ consisting of affect of service, information control, and library as place. The result is that the average value assessment on the performance of the three library users above is good. For UNESA and ITS libraries, order an assessment of the best by the user is a library as place, information control and affect of service. In Unair library, user ratings on the dimensions of the order of the best in a row is a library as place, affect of service, and information control. Keywords: libqual, user perception, university librarie

    Factors Affecting Children while Using Public Libraries in Indonesia and Taiwan

    This research’s objective is to describe the factors that influence children while using a public library in Indonesia and Taiwan. In this context researchers will look at five factors (1) psychological variable, (2) demographics variable, (3) role-related variable, (4) environmental variable, (5) source characteristics variable. This research uses descriptive approach by gathering data from respondents. The target population in this research were children in Taiwan and Indonesia. The number of samples is considered to be the same, with 100 children in Taiwan and 100 children in Indonesia, aged 7-12 years old. Of the total respondents, 65% were women and 35% were men, the number was the same among respondents in Taichung and in Surabaya. The majority of respondents are aged 9 and 12 years, as much as 43% in Indonesia, while in Taiwan it is the 10-11 years old age group, with 46% respondents. From the results of the research it can be concluded that the factors that encourage children to take advantage of public libraries include psychological factors in which children in Indonesia and Taiwan both want to increase their cognitive capacity through sources of information provided in the library, there are interesting findings that Taiwanese children are not affected by the distance of the library away from home. The library remains a place worth visiting on weekends

    The Motivation of Senior Citizens in Visiting Public Libraries in Developing Country

    This study aims to describe the motivation of senior citizens in visiting public libraries in Surabaya. This research uses a desciptive qualitative approach. Data collection is done through questionnaires and interviews with elderly respondents who ever visit the Surabaya Public Libraries. The population of this study includes elderly library users (aged 60 years and over) and they have experience visit public libraries in Surabaya. The motivation of the senior citizens can be divided into two, namely intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The recommendation from this paper related to collection, facility, and services improvement, including providing special space for senior citizen in public libraries in Surabaya

    Readiness For Digital Preservation In Indonesia

    Libraries using institutional repositories aim to manage and preserve digital content. As digital collection providers, they must be prepared to face various problems, especially policy issues regarding how digital collections can develop and can meet user needs in a relatively long time (long-term use). The problem that will be faced is the age of data storage media which can only last at least 10 years so that digital collections must be copied again to reduce the possibility of losing the information contained in digital collections. This problem is one of the reasons for the digital preservation of repository digital collections which are intellectual and cultural property as well as assets for the repository itself. This preservation is a form of organizational readiness in maintaining the existence of the library and preserving the collection so that it has a long term of use. This research uses descriptive quantitative method with a random sampling process with 100 respondents netted in the webometric. Library readiness in digital preservation reaches the consolidate stage, repository institution consolidates its resources for the development of digital preservation.     The purpose of this study is to determine the problems that occur when the migration of library automation systems in the University of Sebelas Maret (UNS) Library, such as the causes, constraints, and advantages and disadvantages of the SLiMS automation system. This study was used descriptive method. Data collection method used in this study is the interview and observation. The obstacle faced by librarians in implementing SLiMS is that librarians who are not yet accustomed to need time to learn. Overall the implementation of the SLiMS automation system at the UNS Library went smoothly, although there were a number of problems, the library was able to overcome the problem. The results of this study revealed that the migration of the Library automation system to SLiMS was carried out to support the increasingly complex needs of users

    The Utilization of Flashcards in Children Information Literacy Development

    A Flashcard is one of the media to develop student information literacy in which its application includes activities of analyzing, writing and telling stories. Storytelling is a process of reading that is useful to increase the courage to appear in public. This research used descriptive method. For preliminary research, we used experiments, making flash cards as learning media for elementary students. After that, the students were interviewed. The results of this study indicate that students are very enthusiastic to start a flashcard game that they think is fun. The benefits of a flashcard game include improving language skills, increasing the ability to compose stories, remembering and memorizing, analyzing a problem, and enriching vocabulary. Apart from the cognitive side, the benefits of a flashcard game can also increase self-confidence, develop good and effective communication, and enhance creativity. The concept of a flashcard is a learning medium by playing. The advantages of flashcards include fun learning media, and simple and attractive shapes as they are pictorial and colorful
